PADI Advanced Open Water Courses

Overview

Once you have completed your PADI Open Water Course, the next step is to enhance your scuba skills with the PADI Advanced Open Water Program. We offer regular Advanced Open Water diver courses from Cairns on our overnight vessel OceanQuest.

There are no formal classroom sessions with this PADI course, and no exam! The only academic work required is to read the relevant chapters in the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Manual and complete the knowledge reviews at the end of each chapter.

Then the fun begins! You will need a minimum of two days to complete your PADI Advanced Open Water Course on the Great Barrier Reef. Join us on board our overnight vessel OceanQuest for one or two nights or hop on two day trips on SeaQuest and return a certified Advanced diver!

Your 5 training adventure dives include two core dives in Deep and Underwater Navigation. The remaining three adventure dives will be a selection of Night Dive, Peak Performance Buoyancy Dive, Fish ID, Underwater Naturalist and Boat Diver.

Medical and altitude information

All scuba participants must meet medical questionnaire requirements. Some conditions or medications may prevent you from diving. These requirements can be found on our Can I Dive? page, and we strongly recommend reviewing before booking.

It is required by Queensland law that you must wait at least 24 hours after diving before going to altitude or flying – there is no guarantee that this requirement will prevent decompression sickness. There are no current guidelines regarding diving after flying.

Altitude is defined as 300m/1000ft above sea level. Certain other tourist attractions around Cairns and Tropical North Queensland involve travelling to altitude. These include the Atherton Tablelands and the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, so we recommend a gap between booking these experiences and any dive course or trip. Under normal circumstances, you should be out of the water on your last dive by 2pm on day trips and 12pm on our overnight trips.

Review

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“I did my advanced open water course with them in October last year as a 2D1N liveaboard. There is nothing I can fault them for. The rooms were clean and beds comfortable, and the food delicious and plentiful. The instructors were friendly, patient and knowledgeable. The dives themselves are easy and relaxing with plenty to see. The night dive still ranks as one of my favourites, with a lot of grey reef sharks and giant trevallies. I would definitely recommend doing a live aboard with divers den if you want to experience the GBR on a budget and limited time.”
