I.D.C. STAFF INSTRUCTOR

The PADI Staff Instructor course qualifies the PADI professional to become involved in the training of PADI Instructors and as such is an extremely gratifying experience. It is also one of the quickest and easiest routes towards becoming a PADI Master Instructor.

 

The SI course enables you to:

Independently teach and certify PADI Assistant Instructors.
Conduct specific IDC/IOC training segments under the direct supervision of a PADI Course Director.
Evaluate and critique IDC/IOC candidate academic, confined water and open water presentations.
Provide counselling and remedial training for IDC/IOC and IDC Staff Instructor candidates.
Assist with training during instructor-level continuing education programs, such as PADI Specialty Instructor Training courses.
Observe the orientation and closing sessions of a PADI Instructor Examination.

Prerequisites

  • Renewed and in teaching status as a PADI Instructor for the current year.
  • PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer rating.
  • Agree to conduct all levels of diver training consistent with the standards and philosophy outlined in the PADI Instructor Manual.
  • Agree to use the PADI system and components in its entirety.

PADI Materials Required

The following materials are required by PADI Standards, i.e. you must have these as a minimum to attend the course:

  • PADI Course Director Manual
  • PADI Instructor Manual
  • Instructor Candidate Workbook
  • Assistant Instructor Workbook
  • Best of the Undersea Journal
  • The Law and the Diving Professional
  • Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty Instructor Outline
  • Confined Water Evaluation Slate
  • Open Water Evaluation Slate
  • Confined Water Lesson Preparation Slate
  • Open Water Training Dive Lesson Planning Slate
  • Aquatic Cue Cards - Confined Water and Open Water
  • Personal Log Book (PADI Professional Log 1000 recommended)

PADI Materials can be ordered directly from PADI or through us.
Please allow ample time as we carry only a small stock of these items
and can not guarantee PADI's stock levels.

Administrative Requirements

  • Provide proof of current teaching status with PADI.
    (Ask your PADI local area office for written proof to this effect if you
    do not have a decal on your Instructor card indicating your current status.)
  • Provide photocopies of the following certification cards (front and back): PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor; PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer. (Wall Certificates are not acceptable)
  • Provide 4 passport size photographs
  • Provide current medical certificate
  • Bring current log book(s) to record all diving activities

Equipment Requirements

  • Mask, fins and snorkel
  • Full set of SCUBA equipment, including:
  • B.C.D
  • regulator with alternate air source and submersible pressure gauge
  • wetsuit
  • underwater timing device
  • depth gauge
  • knife, compass
  • emergency signalling devices (whistle and safety sausage)
  • weightbelt
  • Underwater slate(s) and pencils

Tanks, weights and air fills will be provided by us at no extra charge.

Inclusions

The following items are included in the course fee:

  • 2 days personal tuition from the Course Director, followed by a full audit of an entire IDC (10 days)
  • Pool use, including weights, tanks and all air fills.
  • Consultation and remedial training.
  • All boat fees for open water training.
  • Pool use for extra practice sessions (subject to availability).
  • PADI IDC Staff Instructor certification card.
  • PADI Staff Instructor wall certificate.

Exclusions

The following items are not included in the course fee:

  • PADI materials as required for this course.
  • PADI Staff Instructor registration fee (see current PADI Price List).
  • Transfers, meals and accommodation.

How to prepare for the course:

  • Book early to avoid disappointment: 20 % to secure a place and balance 21 days before course date.
  • Obtain all required course materials. Order directly from PADI or through Deep Sea Divers Den.
  • Undergo Medical Examination to Australian Standard as 4005.1
  • Ensure you meet Administrative Requirements as listed above.
  • Revise the Diving Knowledge Workbook in conjunction with the Encyclopaedia for theoretical preparation. [You will be subjected to five theory exams of twenty questions each in the areas of Physics; Physiology; Equipment; General Skills and Environment; Recreational Dive Planner]
  • Practice all PADI Open Water Diver Course skills to demonstration quality.[ You will undergo a full PADI Skill Evaluation Circuit as part of the course]
  • Review PADI Standards and ensure your PADI Instructor Manual is up to date with all the relevant changes as advised through the quarterly Training Bulletins. [ You will sit an open-book Standards Exam during the first two days of the Course].
  • Prepare an Academic microteaching presentation (IDC-style) of a topic of your choice (no "Equipment" MLG's allowed). This presentation will be evaluated by the Course Director (but not in front of IDC Candidates).
  • Prepare a Confined Water presentation (IDC-style) of a skill of your choice. This presentation will be evaluated by the Course Director (but not in front of IDC Candidates).
